Flog The Crippled Camel

The Blue Bag Rag's pre-eminent editorialist is back with a tale of how he came to favor severing ties with DeKalb and adding more government, this city, to our lives. It was the straw that broke the camel's back, a trite expression but more relevant than he may think. Given that a camel is often described as a horse designed by committee, it is an appropriate analogy for government, especially the two most overbearing in our lives: the county; and the city.

One key ingredient at that time was the strong divisiveness between the population in the Dunwoody area (yet to be fully defined) and the county government and this was leveraged by the pro-city forces to foster great emotional support for their goals. The angry folks were of the unthinking sort, who when confronted with an issue respond with "Something must be done. This is something. Let's do this." Committees were formed and another camel was designed. Hastily, lest another something crop up catching the attention of the unthinking, or the unthinking start thinking. If that force were great in you, then you saw success manifested in a new camel, one with the tongue of a snake, a greedy appetite, and enormous capacity for defecation. But, it is your camel, and that's all that matters.

Much has changed. The original antagonist, Vernon Jones, is gone. In the meantime DeKalb had a CEO, who during a pandemic, revealed a stark contrast between the his camel and Dunwoody's. The comparison does not favor Dunwoody, and it has become clear that the editorialist's real issue was not with DeKalb's camel, but with a particular politician's personality. This cannot happen in Dunwoody because this camel ain't designed like that. But neither will we get the likes of a Michael Thurmond.

History loops, and while it may not repeat itself, the verses rhyme. Now it appears that Dunwoody's camel jockeys may well have loaded that last, crippling straw on their camel's back. We seem to be in another period where the electorate is at odds with those camel jockeys at city hall, just as pro-city forces were at odds with DeKalb's back in the day. Things are not likely to dissipate in a couple of news cycles---this disconnect has legs. We even have a re-run of the "Jill and Vernon, sitting in a tree..." with a top city pol and a vendor exec having a remote rendezvous described by one critic as secret while defended by the pol as private. In this context the "privacy for me, but not for thee" storyline will not play well, and is reminiscent of the kind of haughty politics that fueled the flight from DeKalb.

If the electorate remains angry then are we about to get a new camel? We can hope.

It's The Optics, Stupid

This is no more true than today, what with click-bait, virtual adoration and hate, and all that. You are what you appear to be. Take care to appear to be what you want people to think you are. Sometimes that isn't easy. Sometimes you really want something, you do something that just doesn't look that good. What to do? Well, most folks try to do it in the dark. There is a name for many of these people: politicians.

Optics have gotten really bad in daVille.

Intersectionality. Government surveillance meets political opacity. A marriage made in, well, made in somewhere or something. But the wedding was held at city hall, though a recent tryst was held further away. Enter the optics.

Yet, not unusual, at least in politics. A vendor exec. A politician. They meet. Neutral territory. No published agenda. No public notification. But...results. Shortly after, vendor gets concessions on a contract. Correlation? Causality? Who knows. That's what political opacity is all about. But opacity came up against open records requests. Revealing emails were revealed. Timelines were drawn up. Not a good look.

Opacity meets optics. But the politician is term limited. Could an executive position be in the future?

Surprise! SURPRISE!

Seems like a bunch of founders [successfully] came out in opposition to the phallic 55+ apartments the city bureaucrats planned for the Life South site. This has led some of these founders to do their very best Gomer impersonation expressing surprise at how all these city bureaucrats could be so out of touch with the folks who actually live in Dunwoody, many of whom voted for the city that cuts their paychecks.

Really Gomers? Surprise? These are the same folks who [should have?] wrote the city charter that included an impenetrable firewall between our elected officials and the bureaucrats who are then free to treat this city like their very own playground. Yet now the Gomers are surprised that this is exactly what happened. Surely these statesmen at least read the charter, and mayhap understood it. If they were trying to make a mockery of democracy what would they have done differently?

Let's just say that their surprise and shock seems a bit disingenuous.

Where Were You?

This is a party game: where were you when <fill in the blank> happened? You know, like 9/11, the shuttle disaster, the Kennedy assassinations, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, or the fall of Saigon (or Kabul). But that's not today's diatribe. Today's question is put to the Fourth Estate: where were you, where the hell have you been and what have you been doing?

The AJC, given cover by the Grey Lady, is spilling ink ostensibly editorializing that Biden should step aside because of sudden onset age. Yep, he's an overnight octagenarian. To hear these two pontificate you'd think Biden went from the vim and vinegar of a mid-life crisis (he does own a Corvette) to full blown old-age senility. And the Fourth Estate? Well, they didn't see that coming. Really?

To be kind, the AJC opinion piece is filled with merde de cheval, and predictably so, as it is consistent with previous behavior. By headline this is billed as a call for Biden to step aside. For the good of the country, wink, wink. But, as they always have, they digressed into a hit piece on Trump. This harped on the only thing the debate offered: CNN fact checkers accuse Trump of thirty prevarications. Not noted by the AJC are Biden's nine lies or his long history of a strained relationship with the truth. Not that one liar is better than another, but in their partisanship it seems the editorial board would have you believe one, their one, is better. Their argument against Trump is nonsensical and arrogant. Nonsensical in that they characterize their enemy as a pathological liar yet quote him suggesting those quotes are gospel truths. Arrogant in that they believe, and expect us to believe, that they are somehow the sole arbiters of truth, when all they really have is what we all have: an opinion.

But they simply could not leave bad enough alone, they had the chutzpah to bring up George Washington's "farewell address," specifically in regards to partisanship. The AJC editorial staff is unashamedly leftist, AKA Democrat, and they are unrelenting in bashing Republicans. Exclusively. This is an Orwellian level of propaganda born of intense hubris. They claim to be our source of real news, of objective information, yet their leftward tilt leads them into biased reporting replete with misleading language and disinformation.

And if we are to believe they are so damned knowledgeable how could they be blindsided? How could it be that they were surprised? Or, maybe they weren't. Maybe they knew all along, after all, anyone watching the D-Day ceremonies witnessed this same senility on parade. If they didn't know they should have. Either way they have violated a public trust and maybe, just maybe, they are the ones who have finally stepped aside.

In The Beginning...

...there were dinosaurs and then came Tube Man.

When the city is run by clowns we're going to get a circus.
